But to the surprise of some of the demonstrators, two of them turned the camera away from the crowd, because they couldn't see what was going on. The men looked around, and there was a large, empty field where the crowd was gathering, not far from what was called the Albuquerque Police Department's headquarters. The police officer, Col. Andrew Miller, was sitting outside with three of the youths as a group of about six officers sat just outside the field, carrying their batons. He was standing there, with an officer dressed in riot gear and a taser. Both the riot officers and Miller were holding their rifles on the field. Miller wasn't armed, but they were. The youths then charged back, and one of them yelled at the rioters what to do. The others turned, one by one, over. A short time later, the other boys tried to grab Miller by the shoulders and beat him with the batons, but the officers stopped him. According to one police report, the boys shouted at Miller, "Take our gun away, no more cops! We are a military!" as the group left him behind. "I was just shouting for my kids to leave the academy," Miller said. When asked why he wasn't shot, he gave the officers his own statement at the hands
