Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been under pressure to come to grips with the fallout from his controversial decision to fire Tim Hudak, the former Liberal cabinet minister.

Trudeau, who had set out to end the province's "back door" tax rebate program in April, announced a review late Wednesday, saying it will take up to 40 days. A decision on a date and time has not been expected by Sunday.

An estimated 40 per cent of households in the provinces receive their rebates. It's considered one of the least generous schemes that can be used.

The rebates are given through government-initiated rebates. But a recent study from an Alberta think tank found that only about 10 per cent of Quebec households have received them because of government policies. A typical Quebec household, the study found, is given $7 to $10 in rebates annually.

"We do want to be very clear that there is never any chance for any of the government of Quebec to give the tax rebate program back under their control," said David Gee.

"The program is part of Trudeau's commitment to giving Canadians across Canada the certainty they deserve."

It is expected, however, that Trudeau will not make these concessions until there is agreement from other provinces if the federal
